Les chutes de neige ne parviendront pas \u00e0&nbsp;contrebalancer les centaines de gigatonnes de glace qui se d\u00e9versent dans l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an, contribuant ainsi \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9l\u00e9vation du niveau de la mer et mettant en p\u00e9ril la vie de&nbsp;millions d&rsquo;habitants. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Au Groenland, la&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/sciences\/definitions\/chimie-fonte-16520\/\">fonte<\/a>&nbsp;de la&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/planete\/actualites\/climatologie-formation-calotte-polaire-paradoxe-enfin-resolu-48699\/\">calotte glaciaire<\/a>&nbsp;est irr\u00e9m\u00e9diable, selon des scientifiques qui avancent qu&rsquo;elle continuerait \u00e0 r\u00e9tr\u00e9cir \u00ab&nbsp;<em>m\u00eame si le&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/planete\/definitions\/changement-climatique-rechauffement-climatique-13827\/\">r\u00e9chauffement climatique<\/a>&nbsp;s&rsquo;arr\u00eatait aujourd&rsquo;hui&nbsp;<\/em>\u00bb&nbsp;car les chutes de neige ne compensent plus les pertes de glace. \u00ab&nbsp;<em>Les&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/planete\/breves\/calotte-glaciaire-groenland-50-ans-fonte-groenland-vus-satellites-nasa-1119\/\">glaciers<\/a>&nbsp;du Groenland ont en quelque sorte franchi un point de non-retour, o\u00f9 les chutes de neige qui reconstituent la&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/planete\/definitions\/climatologie-inlandsis-5313\/\">calotte glaciaire<\/a>&nbsp;chaque ann\u00e9e ne peuvent plus contrebalancer la glace qui s&rsquo;\u00e9coule des&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/planete\/definitions\/neige-glacier-15418\/\">glaciers<\/a>&nbsp;vers l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an&nbsp;<\/em>\u00bb, a expliqu\u00e9 dans un communiqu\u00e9 l&rsquo;Universit\u00e9 d&rsquo;Ohio State, o\u00f9 travaillent les auteurs de l&rsquo;\u00e9tude publi\u00e9e par la revue&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43247-020-0001-2\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Communications Earth and Environment<\/em><\/a>, le 13 ao\u00fbt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Deux d\u00e9cennies de fonte acc\u00e9l\u00e9r\u00e9e&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background has-very-light-gray-background-color\">Le changement climatique p\u00e8se lourd sur les glaciers et la&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/planete\/actualites\/climatologie-fonte-glaces-record-groenland-2012-origine-naturelle-47246\/\">fonte de la calotte glaciaire<\/a>&nbsp;menace des dizaines de millions de personnes \u00e0 travers le monde. Les rapports alarmants sur la fonte des&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/planete\/actualites\/climatologie-certains-glaciers-fondent-beaucoup-plus-vite-prevu-35124\/\">glaces<\/a>&nbsp;\u00e0 travers le gigantesque territoire&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/planete\/definitions\/geographie-arctique-9779\/\">arctique<\/a>, r\u00e9gion qui se r\u00e9chauffe&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/planete\/actualites\/fonte-glaces-rechauffement-climatique-fonte-glaces-poles-six-fois-plus-rapide-quil-ya-30-ans-79992\/\">deux fois plus vite<\/a>&nbsp;que le reste de la plan\u00e8te, se multiplient depuis plusieurs ann\u00e9es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cette \u00eele de deux millions de km<sup>2<\/sup>&nbsp;(pr\u00e8s de quatre fois la superficie de la France), bord\u00e9e aux trois quarts par les eaux de l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an Arctique, est recouverte \u00e0 85 % de glace. \u00ab<em>&nbsp;L&rsquo;\u00e9tude confirme les r\u00e9sultats de nombreuses autres \u00e9tudes (&#8230;) selon lesquels la combinaison de la fonte et du d\u00e9tachement des icebergs explique la grande quantit\u00e9 de glace perdue du Groenland au cours des deux derni\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb, a r\u00e9sum\u00e9 pour l&rsquo;AFP Ruth Mottram,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/metiers\/climatologie-climatologue-20\/\">climatologue<\/a>&nbsp;de l&rsquo;Institut danois de&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/planete\/definitions\/climatologie-meteorologie-14486\/\">m\u00e9t\u00e9orologie<\/a>&nbsp;(DMI), sp\u00e9cialiste de l&rsquo;Arctique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background has-very-light-gray-background-color\">Dans les ann\u00e9es 1980 et 90, la&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/planete\/actualites\/climatologie-lacs-sous-glaciaires-decouverts-sous-calotte-groenlandaise-50598\/\">calotte glaciaire<\/a>&nbsp;perdait environ 450 gigatonnes (environ 450 milliards de tonnes) de glace par an, remplac\u00e9e par les chutes de neige, ont relev\u00e9 les scientifiques apr\u00e8s l&rsquo;analyse de quelque 40 ans de donn\u00e9es. \u00c0&nbsp;partir des ann\u00e9es 2000, la fonte s&rsquo;est acc\u00e9l\u00e9r\u00e9e, grimpant \u00e0 500 gigatonnes mais n&rsquo;a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 compens\u00e9e par les chutes de neige. \u00ab&nbsp;<em>La calotte glaciaire du Groenland perd de sa&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/sciences\/definitions\/physique-masse-15213\/\">masse<\/a>&nbsp;\u00e0 un rythme acc\u00e9l\u00e9r\u00e9 au XXI<sup>e<\/sup>&nbsp;si\u00e8cle, ce qui en fait le plus important contributeur \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9l\u00e9vation du niveau de la mer&nbsp;<\/em>\u00bb, souligne (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Le point de non-retour est-il atteint ?&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Toutefois, si la fonte des glaciers groenlandais li\u00e9e au changement climatique est extr\u00eamement&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/planete\/breves\/araignee-rechauffement-climatique-baby-boom-araignees-arctique-2835\/\">pr\u00e9occupante<\/a>, d&rsquo;autres membres de la communaut\u00e9 scientifique estiment pr\u00e9matur\u00e9 de parler d&rsquo;un point de non-retour. \u00ab&nbsp;<em>Nous ne savons pas de combien les concentrations en&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/planete\/definitions\/climatologie-gaz-effet-serre-5381\/\">gaz \u00e0 effet de serre<\/a>&nbsp;vont augmenter&nbsp;<\/em>\u00bb, a expliqu\u00e9 \u00e0 l&rsquo;AFP Ruth Mottram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les r\u00e9sultats publi\u00e9s dans&nbsp;<em>Nature<\/em>&nbsp;montrent que \u00ab&nbsp;<em>m\u00eame si nous stabilisions les temp\u00e9ratures (et les&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/sciences\/definitions\/physique-emission-389\/\">\u00e9missions<\/a>&nbsp;de gaz \u00e0 effet de serre) au niveau actuel, la calotte glaciaire continuerait \u00e0 fondre, mais seulement jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 ce que sa taille soit \u00e0 nouveau en \u00e9quilibre avec le&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/planete\/definitions\/climatologie-climat-13771\/\">climat<\/a><\/em>\u00bb, a-t-elle indiqu\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D&rsquo;apr\u00e8s une&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsl.ch\/fr\/2020\/08\/le-niveau-de-la-mer-pourrait-augmenter-de-dix-centimetres-avec-la-fonte-des-glaces-au-groenland.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00e9tude r\u00e9cente<\/a>&nbsp;de l&rsquo;Universit\u00e9 de Lincoln (Royaume-Uni), la fonte des glaces au Groenland devrait contribuer \u00e0 hauteur de 10 \u00e0 12 cm \u00e0 la hausse du niveau des mers d&rsquo;ici 2100. Le Groupe d&rsquo;experts intergouvernemental sur l&rsquo;\u00e9volution du climat (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/planete\/definitions\/climatologie-giec-13715\/\">Giec<\/a>) avait estim\u00e9, en 2013, que le niveau des mers monterait de 60 centim\u00e8tres d&rsquo;ici la fin du si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En outre, la fonte de la calotte glaciaire n&rsquo;est pas seulement un&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/sante\/definitions\/medecine-symptome-834\/\">sympt\u00f4me<\/a>&nbsp;du changement climatique, elle est aussi un facteur de r\u00e9chauffement de la Plan\u00e8te.
