D\u00e9put\u00e9 du Loiret \u00e0 vingt-sept ans en 1932, puis ministre de l\u2019\u00c9ducation Nationale et des Beaux-Arts en 1936 sous le Front Populaire, on lui doit de grandes r\u00e9formes de l\u2019enseignement (scolarit\u00e9 obligatoire jusqu\u2019\u00e0 14 ans, unification des programmes scolaires, sport \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cole, promotion des id\u00e9es d\u2019\u00e9ducation nouvelle) ainsi que l\u2019ouverture de mus\u00e9es nationaux (Mus\u00e9e d\u2019art moderne de Paris) et la cr\u00e9ation, en 1939, du Festival de Cannes (dont la premi\u00e8re \u00e9dition ne pourra avoir lieu qu\u2019en 1946).<br \/>\nLe r\u00e9alisateur Laurent V\u00e9ray d\u00e9taille ses quatre ann\u00e9es de d\u00e9tention. Par ce choix, on p\u00e9n\u00e8tre v\u00e9ritablement dans l\u2019intimit\u00e9 de Jean Zay et dans sa pens\u00e9e, ses id\u00e9aux et sa foi en la justice, malgr\u00e9 les \u00e9preuves qu\u2019il subit. Le film repose sur ses \u00e9crits pendant cette p\u00e9riode : cartes et lettres \u00e0 ses parents et \u00e0 sa femme, carnet qu\u2019il tient au jour le jour et d\u2019autres textes qui seront r\u00e9unis en 1946 dans l\u2019ouvrage Souvenirs et solitude.<br \/>\nLaurent V\u00e9ray est historien du cin\u00e9ma et universitaire. Il a consacr\u00e9 une partie de son travail aux images d\u2019archives et leurs utilisations depuis la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale.
